My space - Janice Anderssen

Haring after the latest fashions can be a goose chase that can cost not just a fortune but also your chances of a home you truly love, says Janice Anderssen. Rule number one: Lose the rulebook.

I don’t give a hoot what everyone else is doing, whether that’s shopping for the latest designer lounge suites, choosing expensive art for the walls or dressing up windows.

It’s all very well if you are one of the approximately 1% of us who can afford to fork out every year to keep up with the ever-changing fashions, but most of us a) don’t have the money, or b) don’t have the inclination.

So, forget about what’s hot and what’s not and design the home you want.

Eclectic style takes pieces from different sources and periods and allows you to design interiors with imagination and creativity. But to make sure you’re house doesn’t end up looking like the living room of a loopy uncle, there are a few guidelines.

  • Keep in mind the basic principles of design: Combine a variety of styles with colour, texture and finish.

  • Don’t overdo the colours. It is far better to stick to a few neutral shades or you will overpower the senses. Your furnishing choices will no doubt provide plenty of personality.

  • Try to match up pieces as much as possible. Look for common factors, whether it is the style, shape, fabric or finish.

  • Remember that everything you do can be changed on a whim so let go.
